System Navigation

Knowing who to contactwhere to go, or how to start can be one of the biggest barriers to getting help.

At TNDF, food is often the first point of connection — but it is not the only way we support our community.

Through our Social Services branch, we help people navigate complex systems that can feel overwhelming, confusing, or hard to access. Many community members have shared that knowing who to contactwhere to go, or how to start can be one of the biggest barriers to getting help. We are here to walk alongside you through that process.

You do not need to be a current TNDF client to reach out for support

What is System Navigation?

In social services, systems navigation refers to the process of supporting individuals to understand, access, and move through complex service systems. This includes identifying the most appropriate supports, assisting with applications or referrals, explaining eligibility and processes in plain language, and helping reduce barriers that can prevent people from successfully connecting to services.

What Systems Can We Help Navigate?

We can help with system navigation related to: housing, legal matters, employment, mental health, relationships, income supports, and more.

How we can help

  • Listen with compassion and understanding

Honouring your autonomy and your right to make your own choices.

  • Make warm referrals wherever possible

This means we actively support people in connecting with services. This may include helping make the initial contact, sharing information with consent, explaining what to expect, and reducing the stress of navigating systems on their own, rather than simply handing someone a phone number or website.

  • Technology use (by appointment)

For professional purposes such as employment applications, legal matters, housing, or accessing services.

  • Provide harm reduction supplies and support

Access to support should not feel impossible.

Through partnerships and outreach, we connect people directly with trusted service providers — some on-site at TNDF and others within the broader community. Visit our Social Services Hub for more information.

If you are feeling stuck, unsure where to turn, or just need help figuring out your next step, contact us and we’ll help you find the right connections.

Community feedback has shaped our work in the past, and it continues to guide what we do next. If there are programs or supports you would like to see offered in the future, we want to hear from you.
